Restaurateur Alison Price Becker opened Alison Eighteen with her partners Michael Namer and Gary Spindler in January 2012. Returning to the Manhattan dining scene after the close of her first restaurant, Alison on Dominick Street, nearly a decade ago, Alison’s return was not only welcomed but highly anticipated. Alison Eighteen beckons guests with the signature Alison hospitality just as much it does the simple, straightforward food and alluring ambiance.
The Alison Eighteen menu, features casual and accessible French-influenced American dishes, refined in its simplicity. The menu takes inspiration from local green markets and organic farms, offering soul-satisfying dishes prepared and plated using methods designed to coax honest flavors from fresh seasonal ingredients. Roasted meats have pride of place on the Alison Eighteen menu, courtesy of an enormous rotisserie. Cocktails are classically-crafted, while the small but thoughtful wine list showcases approximately 150 bottles focusing on small producers and bio-dynamic selections.
Housed in “The Ten Commandments Building,” so named for the stone tablets that adorn the imposing and richly ornate Beaux-Arts edifice, the restaurant’s exterior is just as impressive as the expansive space discovered upon entering the floor-to-ceiling glass frontage. The interior, designed by Edward Asfour and Peter Guzy of Asfour Guzy Architects, was inspired by the classic brasseries of Paris. The 7,000 square-foot-space is relaxed, open and timeless; managing to be both contemporary and classic. Tufted eggplant-hued leather banquettes punctuated by signature cherry red buttons complement rich walnut table and chairs. The warmth of chandelier-lit space casts a glow throughout the softly-lit restaurant illuminating custom-designed wallpaper by Payton Cosell Turner. The toile print of whimsical vignettes of caricatured animals, scenes of New York, and Alison herself, has been expertly designed to reflect both the spirit and approach of the restaurant and its proprietor.
Alison Eighteen serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and features a to-go counter serving pastries for breakfast and soups and sandwiches for lunch.
